An oval-shaped departure from a circular cross-section of a capsule cap or body.
Also called: capsule shell ovality; capsule out-of-roundness; capsule out of round.
Why do ovality reports use both millimeters and percent?
They may be different metrics. Absolute ovality can be expressed as maximum minus minimum diameter in millimetres; a relative form can divide that difference by the defined mean diameter. State the formula, cross-section and conditions rather than comparing an unqualified value or percentage.
Convert values to a compatible metric before comparing them. Ovality concerns the section’s shape; runout and concentricity concern relationships to a reference axis or centre. Each needs its own geometry and measurement method.
One direction does not establish the largest and smallest diameters around a section. Retain axial position, angular coverage and support method when comparing measurements.
Compare the measured profile with observed assembly fit when investigating an oval mouth. Geometry can contribute to a jam, but cannot identify every cause by itself.
