Dosing disc
A disc with bores in which powder doses are formed before transfer into capsule bodies.
Also called: dosing disk; dose disc.
How the dosing disc and tamping pins work
The disc provides the bores in which powder doses are formed. Tamping pins act on powder within those bores; the resulting plug is then transferred into a capsule body. The powder bed, pins and disc are separate elements of this tamping-style arrangement.
| Term | Role in a tamping-style arrangement |
|---|---|
| Dosing disc | Provides the bores where the dose is formed. |
| Tamping pin | Acts on powder in a bore. |
| Powder plug | The formed material transferred to the shell. |
| Capsule body | Receives the dose after formation. |
Does a thicker dosing disc guarantee a heavier capsule?
Disc geometry contributes to the space available for dose formation, but the delivered mass also depends on powder behaviour, compaction and transfer. It is not a fixed milligram conversion from disc thickness. Settings must be evaluated for the actual tamping-style arrangement and powder.
A readily flowing granular formulation may still be difficult to retain as a cohesive slug. Flow into the dosing area and formation of a transferable dose are different demands. Performance with one formulation or dosing modification does not establish the same result for another blend.
Dosing-disc tooling and capsule size
A capsule-size label describes the shell format, whereas the disc belongs to the powder-metering arrangement. For a tooling comparison, keep shell size, bore/disc specification and target formulation together. A shared shell size alone does not demonstrate that two dosing setups will deliver the same mass.
If a supplier proposes a different metering technology, compare its dose-formation and transfer arrangement rather than assuming the same disc specification applies.
