Cold forming

Mechanically shaping a formable aluminium-based laminate into blister cavities without the plastic-web preheating used in thermoforming.

Also called: cold-form blister; cold form foil; CFF.

What makes a blister cold-formed?

Cold forming mechanically shapes a formable aluminium-based laminate into pockets rather than softening a plastic web by heating. With mechanical plug forming, the material, cavity geometry, plug and process conditions act together.

The word “cold” describes this forming operation. It does not mean that every later operation on the line is unheated: joining the lidding material is a separate step. Keep cavity formation and seal formation distinct when reading a machine description.

Is coldform foil just a sheet of aluminium?

Not for the coldform structures discussed here. A forming laminate can combine nylon, aluminium and a polymer sealing layer, with different polymer constructions available. The aluminium barrier layer is one component of the complete formable structure.

Do not infer a universal layer recipe from “coldform” or “Alu-Alu”. Record the actual laminate and matching lidding specification. Likewise, the ability to form one laminate on a configured line does not establish compatibility with every material sold under the same broad label.

Does “total barrier” mean a finished blister has zero ingress?

A material description is not a measured guarantee for every finished pack. Oxygen and moisture transmission have separate units and test conditions. A “total barrier” label cannot replace those details or a defined finished-package result.

Assess forming with the intended cavity and process conditions. A simulation or flat-material datasheet does not by itself demonstrate the absence of a pinhole or continuous seal channel in the finished blister.
